The Dreaded Reading Funk That Refuses To Leave

I have a confession to make. It involves you, in some way. Well if you enjoy my blog. Which I'm assuming, for the sake of my confidence and sanity, that you do.

Anyway, here it is: I'm in a reading funk.

It's a bad one, too. It's been going on since...October? September? Somewhere around there. It's my longest one yet.

Part of the reason for this is that I have been far too involved in the meaningless corners of the internet. (Looking at you, Tumblr.) The other reason? I haven't found a book that has made me it's human slave in far too long. The final reason? I have no clue.

It sucks! I miss being absorbed in a story and characters and all that jazz.

Right now I'm reading one of my Christmas presents, Raw Blue, and it's helping. I'm definitely absorbed, so I'm hoping maybe this will be The One That Fixes My Reading Woes, if you will.

If it isn't, what next? I've tried just taking a step back from reading and it hasn't helped. I've tried reading different things and that hasn't helped so far either. Do you guys have any other tips and/or tricks to get yourself out of a freak reading funk?

(This, by the way, is also my explanation for why my blog posts have been much more sparse than usual.)

  1. This happened to me recently. It was miserable. I believe it came on because of too many mediocre books in a row. For me it took a total genre flip. I had to search books outside my normal genres and sample dozens of books to find the one that stuck. (http://www.talesofwhimsy.com/2012/11/book-review-talking-to-dead.html)
    Good luck!

  2. I've been in a reading funk too. I didn't get out of it until December 22nd: the first full day of Christmas break.

  3. Oh, that sucks, Jessica! I really, really hope Raw Blue can save you, because it is awesome and it's Aussie ;)

If not, well I'm not sure. I know people say to take a break but you've tried that and you've also tried different books. Maybe try a bunch of books, giving them 50-100 pages and just move on until you find another that sticks?

Either way, I hope you can bust your reading funk!

  4. I always re-read my favorite books during a reading frunk!

  5. This has happened to me a couple of times, and i always found that the only way out was to pick up a book only when you felt like it. Meaning that if it had to take one month or one year, so be it. It never worked for me to force myself into reading something, that only ever made it worse.
Sometimes though, when i felt a down about reading, picking up an old favourite like Harry Potter or True Blood could give me back my love for books.
That being said, sometimes i do need a break from reading. I read alot, sometimes more than 15 or 20 books a month, and once every few years i just hit that wall where i need a few weeks or even months off the books. But i always end up coming back. They are my babies after all. <3
