Judging A Book By It's Cover: What I Saw And How I Lied

Whew, kinda a long post title, don't you think? Anyways, this week I'm judging What I Saw And How I Lied by Judy Blundell. I won this from a contest (thanks Jess from Lost In A Book) and wasn't originally going to read it (I entered to win Graceling, which I also won) but read great reviews on it, so I decided to put it on my Plan To Read list. It sounds like a soap opera in book-form. Anyways, here's the cover:

I don't like it. I think they were going for the vintagey-type look-and I love all things vintage-but they didn't do it right and instead it just looks...weird. The lipstick is too dark, the shirt should be a different color than the background, and place the words are in and the font are...lame. It definitely doesn't draw me in and, based just on the cover, would be something that I wouldn't take a second glance at. But, that's just my opinion.... What do you think?

  1. I love this cover but then I completely and utterly adore all things even remotely vintage.
    ;)

    Is it a spy mystery?

  3. I've had this book on my shelf and haven't read it yet either. I definitely want to though. I thought the cover was really original.

  5. Jessica, I tried e-mailing you but it didn't go through. I wanted to let you know that my book The Black Parade: The Phantom Series is related to the song. If you are a huge fan then you will understand it even more and hey, you might even get a different perspective of the song. I hope you will help support raising money for St. Jude and maybe even post a review here. :)

  6. Oh, wow! Then it is definitely on my plan to read list! When I read it, which I hope is soon, I will most definitely be posting a review. Thanks for letting me know. :)

  7. I kind of agree with Jessica. For a vintage look it's not bad at all - however I would have thought the book cover would be more sleuth - and less "it" girl putting on makeup. But then again I can totally see where they are coming from. So my final verdict is - on the fence about it.

But I've WANTED to read this book!! It looks good and now I want to know what she saw and how she lied ;)

  9. I agree with you.
    And it is weird.
It looks like the book my mom use to read.
